Police Citizen's Academy

citizens-police-academy logoThe Lakeville Police Citizen’s Academy is designed to give residents the opportunity to see what it’s like to be a police officer in the City of Lakeville. The Academy allows participants to interact with our officers and tour the facility. The firsthand look will provide a better understanding of police work, our policies and how our agency operates.

Lakeville’s Police Citizen’s Academy is more than just a classroom experience! Participants will also go through realistic hands-on, scenario-based learning. Topics may include:

  • Patrol Operations and Investigations
  • Scenarios – Traffic Stops, Crisis Situations and Domestic Calls
  • Overview of Specialized Units (K-9, Drug Task Force, SWAT Crime Scene Unit, etc.)
  • Dakota 911 (Dispatch)
  • DUI Enforcement – SFST Demonstrations
  • Understanding Use of Force
  • Less Lethal Weapons Demonstrations
  • Active Shooter Response
  • Academy Ride-along
  • And more!

Are you a Lakeville resident interested in learning about the Lakeville Police Department? Apply to be part of our Citizen’s Police Academy. The nine-week course is designed to provide a working knowledge and background of the Lakeville Police Department and foster a closer relationship between our agency and the community.

The Police Citizen's Academy meets nine consecutive Tuesdays beginning on January 10, 2023 from 6-9 p.m. You must be able to commit to ALL times and dates, be at least 20 years old to participate, live in Lakeville and have no criminal record.

The Citizen's Academy is limited in the number of participants. Online applications will be available from October 17 through November 28, 2022. Acceptance notifications will be made on or before December 9, 2022. If accepted, we will notify you of next steps.

  • Names and addresses for two (2) character references
  • Criminal History Waiver (PDF)
